Musically Speaking
Las Cruces Friends of Chamber Music
“Musically Speaking”, 09/12/07

Hello, Friends! Things are moving along well in preparation for our upcoming concert, “Una GALA para Gala”. Our title pays tribute to Salvador Dali’s beloved wife and muse, Helena Ivanova Diakonova (“Gala”), the inspiration for much of his work. The program is going to be fabulous! We will feature Copland’s “Appalachian Spring” along with works by Malcom Arnold, Leos Janacek, and Darius Milhaud. The concert is on Friday, October 5, at 7:30 PM at the Rio Grande Theatre. Please note: this is a change of date from what was originally announced. Tickets are available at White’s Music Box as well as in the Gift Shop of the Art Museum. Incidentally, be sure to keep an eye out for the striking posters up all around town advertising the performance. We are delighted that fractal artist, Maria Kruse, allowed us the use her extraordinary artwork to promote our event!

You won’t want to miss the Salvador Dali exhibit which prompted our planning of this concert. In fact, your concert ticket will entitle you to free admittance to view the exhibit at the Las Cruces Museum of Art ($5 value). Concert tickets are redeemable at any time during the show, but you may wish to attend on one or more of the Saturdays when the Friends of Chamber Music will present programs: September 29, October 27, and November 24. Each of those afternoons there will be a brief talk in the Branigan Cultural Center at 1:15, followed by avante garde music in the Art Museum gallery at 2 PM.

Also, tickets go on sale this weekend for “La Catrina” String Quartet. These wonderfully talented young men will bring a program of primarily Mexican repertoire to San Albino’s on Tuesday, November 20. Tickets available at the Cultural Center in Mesilla, 2231-A Calle de Parian, a block and a half west of the Plaza (next to the Mesilla Post Office). 523-3988. Friday and Saturday, 10-5; Sunday, 11-5. Please contact me if you would be willing to be a part of sponsoring this fabulous event. Padrinos y Madrinas de La Catrina, through their financial and “in-kind” gifts, will make it possible for us to present this wonderful concert for just $5.00 per ticket!

Also on the calendar - watch for info in my next communication: - November 30, Vaughn Williams’ Quintet for horn, cello, clarinet, piano, and violin. 7:30 PM at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church. Tickets, $10. - December 15, 7 PM, Good Samaritan. “Songs of the Season/Canciones Navideñas”. No charge for admission.

By the way, with all that we have on our “plate”, we found it necessary to cancel our Every-Other-Tuesday at the Rio Grande in October. We look forward to returning in the new year. (is it truly just around the corner!?!)

Well, I’m off on vacation in the morning! See you October 5!

Musically yours,

Barbara Toth
